Sprayberry High School
SHS History
Robert D. McCleskey writes about the SHS History:

Sprayberry opened on the day after Labor Day 1952. That was the year Cobb Co changed from 11 to 12 grades. Since the 11th grade from Acworth had gradulated the prior year, only 10 members were in the Senior Class the first year. These were transfer students and others who for some reason did not have credits to gradulate in '51. I will have to dig up my annual to find the 10 names.

I was in the 10th grade that year, class of '55. My brother Seldon McCleskey was in the class of '57, and my sister Gail was in either '60 or '61.

When Sprayberry was built, it was cut out of Acworth, it covered all of East Cobb including Kennesaw. Students came from 5 schools: Blackwells, Kennesaw, Mt Bethel, Mt View, and Elizabeth. The board figured on 200 students, so they built the school for 250. 300 showed up the first day! Mr Quarles, the first principal said the enrollment had reached 502 by the end of the first year. This was before we had a complete Senior Class.

The 1953 "ECHO" lists 11 members for the senior class: Don R. Bryant, Betty Burrell, Virginia Campbell, Ronnie Daniel, Henrietta Ellison, Ina Ree Williams, Bill Wienke, Harold Weeks, Tom Shumaker, Barbara Sue Raines, and Sam McCoy.

The annual further lists 22 members in the original Sprayberry Band. The paper "The Stinger" lists over 30 members, the band was one of the smaller groups in the school. Band members did not receive letters until after I gradulated. It seems Misss Flaum, the girls physical Ed teacher and girls basket ball coach did not believe in bandmembers lettering. By 1955, we were awarded emblems instead.

We had no foot ball team. The boys basketball team won five of 19 games. Their first victory was against Osborne on Dec 16, 1952, 66 to 56. The gilrs two victories came on Jan 13, 1953 also against Osborne, 24 to 20. On Jan 30, they beat Acworth 37 - 35.
